I have a user who is having trouble closing down Outlook 2000. He is running Windows 2K, with office 2K. When he closes down outlook it says "Please wait while Microsoft Outlook Exits" but this box never goes away. You have to go into Task Manager and end the process. I have tried logging in as myself and it shuts down fine, so I recreated the guys profile and it still would not work. The only difference between our accounts is that I have local admin. So I gave the guy local admin but it still wouldn't work. I then reinstalled it but it still won't work.

How large is the pst file? When you logged in as yourself, did you use that pst file or another one?

Two things to try. locate the shortcut to Outlook and right click on it. Go to properties. In the Target catagory you will see the path to Outlook. At the end of the path, type in "/CleanFreeBusy" without the quotes. Launch Outlook a couple of times and wait for the hourglass to go away.
If this doesn't work then Micorsoft suggests installing SP-3 for Office 2000.
