Following my uninstallation of IE 6 (due to an annoying, frequent "IE6 has encountered a problem and needs to shut down" error), I reinstalled IE 5.5. That apparently was successful, BUT since then I am unable to use Outlook 2000, or Outlook Express.
The suggested re-installation or repair of Outlook always fails.

Microsoft Tech Support has offered to help with the re-installation of Win 2 K Pro, but that involves reformatting my C drive AND the reinstallation of All software. (Most of my data backup resides on a newly-installed second drive.)

I'm trying to avoid this onerous hassle, if possible, but Microsoft suggests that a possibly corrupted registry makes reformatting the only answer.

Does anybody have a clue about a "fix"???

Thanks for your help

Have you uninstalled both Outlook and Express?

If you have, you search thru the Registry and delete any obvious references to either program.

It frosts my cookies that MS's answer is to format the drive. That's a sloppy (but easier way) for them to save time.

Just be careful you only take out the OBVIOUS stuff for those two programs.

Of course backing up your Reg before doing this is a given.

Thanks so much for your response! Unfortunately, it's been years since I last tweaked the Registry.

Can you identify steps to accomplish the removal of those Outlook and Outlook Express references. I might give it a try prior to another attempt at reinstalling Outlook from my original disk.

Your help is much appreciatedddddd.

Cordially,

Hugo

Go to the Start button go up to Run... type in "regedit" (no quotes) when the registry opens go to the word Registry on the top left and Select Export Registry.

Do that. It will give you a copy in case you get carried away.

Then go over to Edit and down to find. Do a search for Outlook. (type the word in)

Take out the real obvious stuff. (Highlight and delete.)

Now, a warning. If you make a mistake you MAY render your computer inoperative. Chances are you won't if you stick to only the word Outlook.

When your done press the F5 key to refresh the registry.

Shut down and restart your computer normally. (after exiting the Registry of course.)

Try and reinstall Outlook or Outlook Express.
