In the last month or so, whenever I click on a .DOC file, Word opens normally (Office 2000, SP-3), but the window doesn't seem to have focus (in spite of the title bar indicating that it does). That is, I can't immediately do a search or start typing. I have to click on the window to get things going (or switch to another window and back again). If I simply open Word itself (with no document), there's no problem; I can immediately start typing. This used to work fine. Any ideas?

Hi Marv: Do you have Norton AV installed and if so do you have the Office 2000 Plug-in enabled. To check this open NAV Options>Other>General and see if the Office 2000 Plugin box is checked. If so uncheck and run Word again to see if any improvement. NAV "can" slow MS office apps down somewhat.

That's the answer. I realize that it took longer to open a doc with the virus scan running, but it also prevented full focus from occurring (I waited three minutes, and it never happened). When I turned it off, focus was right there. I guess the down side is that now it isn't scanning my docs. Anyway, thanks for the help.

Hi Marv. Glad that worked out for you. I wouldn't worry too much about scanning word docs. using Office 2000 plugin as NAV will scan them anyways as long as you have autoprotect on.
Under NAV Options>AutoProtect make sure you have the boxes checked under "Scan files when run or opened" and under "File types to scan" that the "All files" radio button is on.
