Is there a way to open an office file in a new window instead of it opening up the file overtop my current work?

You probably have Office 97. I thought I came across a solution to this problem before, but I can't remember it right now. But here's an alternative, you may open up another instance of Excel (Start->Programs->Microsoft Office->MS Excel) and then open up the other file in there so you can have two workbooks open at the same time in different windows.
Hope that helps.
Kevin.
