Hi,

I have just installed Office XP Professional and a strange thing happened: the "Windows Installer" box displays and the progress bar fills up and then says "Office XP installed successfully". It didnt even ask for a serial number or name etc. Thus, when going to open Word or any other office application, it flashes up quickly and then displays the Windows installer box and then quits immediately. This happens within 2 seconds. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times with no luck.

Any ideas appreciated.

Many thanks.

Joe.

When you install, are you installing while logged in with an Admin account? Are you doing a typical install, or a custom install? If custom, are you selecting the option to "Run all from My Computer" rather than the other selections?

Hi,
yes im logged in as admin, but it doesnt even load the standard Office install screens (asking for typical installation, name, and s/n etc). It just displays the little pop up Windows installer - gathering required information box and then pops up a dialog box stating that Office XP was sucessfully installed. I've tried different discs and no luck. Any other ideas?

Go into Add/Remove Programs and click on Change for Office. Then Click Add or Remove features, then click Microsoft Office, and Run all from My Computer, then update.

When i click change, all it shows is the windows installer box and then does nothing. One thing i do recall is that before i could remove the old version of office, i had to reregister the msiexec.exe program - it was located in the wrong place. Could this cause the problem?

What version of the Windows installer is on your system? It would be listed in Add/Remove programs.

PROBLEM SOLVED!

I had to uninstall Norton Antivirus and perform a system restore in safe mode. Norton must have corrupted a file, since on checking the logs, it was Norton that supposedly "fixed" the msiexec.exe program (Windows Installer) in the first place.

Thanks for all the help.
