Office freezes when opening docs

I've run into a problem with MS Office that has completely stumped me. The Office suite applications (Word, Excel etc.) always freeze up when she's in the Open dialog box and clicks the down arrow to browse the directory listing. This first started on Office 2000 SP1. I uninstalled it and installed Office XP SP2 and it still does it. I don't know whether this is more of a OS problem rather than an Office problem.
