Office Apps crash when opening file

When opening Word, Excel, P/Point 2003 and using file, open, I get the My Documents dialog box up, listing all files. Selecting a relevant doc from this directory is no problem but as soon as I try to change the directory, the app. hangs ("not responding"). Same happens on save. Anyone any ideas? At the moment I have to shut the app each time I want to open a new file!

just a joke - as in " an old man very happy"! Thanks again for your help, worked first time and I've passed this on to the incompetents who purport to be the "desktop support" at my company. (The only desktop support I seem to be able to find are the table legs!!)
