Depends on what type of installation you do. Minimal, Typical, Custom.... My complete install is 630 MBs. The installation itself requires at least 2 Gigs of free space before the install, and for Service Pack 1, you'd need at least 1.25 Gig free space for the install.

Dear Jennifer

I see.I intend to buy a laptop; really portable but with HD of only 4GB (not really a HD; precise one should be flash disk).

After install windows xp, users are left with 1.4GB of space left. I am just wandering if I just want Word, Excel and Powerpoint fall under the Custom category, how much space will it occupy. The laptop dont have a cd-rom drive, etc. So I had to install the office from external dvd reader. My Windows XP is SP 2 and as for my MS office, once I install these programs, I will install the SP 1 patch.

You don't have enough free space to run the install. You need 2 Gigs of free space to run the installation for Office 2007. Here are the System Requirements: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/p...

What kind of laptop are you buying that doesn't have a Hard drive? What users are you referring to? I guess I'm confused.

Oh dear... I thought I can have this Office 2007 installed. Look like I have to reverse back to Office 2003.

The laptop I am going to buy is the latest in the market and the most portable ever. In the US, it cost US$299.99. Users? I guess it only be me since the flash HD is so small.

With 1.4 Gig, you won't have much space to install Office 2003 either. What laptop is this that you're buying? The smallest capacity drive I've seen on a new laptop lately is 80 Gig.

Dear Jennifer, I have seen people install Microsoft Office 2003 on a 1.3Gb drive. Not sure how but its there.

But I am not considering whether I want to buy that laptop since it cannot install Office 2007.

The laptop I going to buy is Eee Asus. Do have a search on google for it. Its indeed a very portable and nice machine.

I'm writing from my eee at this very moment with office 2007 installed (PP, excel, word), not slimmed down or anything.
Once you are done with a fresh install of win xp sp2 you will have used just over 1 GB of the 3.8 GB free space you started out with, so, if you install at that point then it is possible to have office, even though it takes almost 2 GB (which is caused by all the stupid cached files that you can't really remove).
