Greetings,

I have a Gateway Pentium II (circa 1998) desktop computer and am working under the MS XP Professional OS and use MS Office 2003 Professional.

When I create a new document in Office 2003 these days, the cursor starts at the very top line of the page at about an inch in from the left border. My default margin settings are at: TOP (1”); BOTTOM (0.5”; LEFT (1”); RIGHT (0.5”). Yet, when I print out, everything looks fine. In am in the PRINT LAYOUT viewing mode.

When I create a new document, I want the starting cursor to visually appear where my margin settings say it should …not at TOP (0”) and LEFT (1”) but at TOP (1”) and LEFT (1”). The only way to get the proper appearance is to space down vertically about 4 lines. But when I print the page, my text starts down about vertically twice that distance.

I thought the problem was with the normal.dot template but follows the HELP instructions didn’t change anything. Sometime back I do recall getting a message saying the normal.dot template had been changed and did I want to save the change. I have no recollection whether I did or not. I even tried deleting normal.dot entirely on the understanding the default normal.dot file would automatically reinstall itself when I started up Word 2003 again. No change.

When I first installed Office 2003 some time ago, everything worked fine. And … alas … I seem to have misplaced the original Office 2003 Professional CD.

Is there any way out of this?

Final thought: Some weeks ago I bought a Dell Latitude D820 Notebook complete with MS XP Professional and MS Office 2003 Professional. In Word 2003, everything works as it should. Just wondering, but would copying the normal.dot and saving it to my desktop computer have a positive effect?

Sorry to have been so verbose. Thanks.

Mike

Today seems like a good day to chew through the restraints.
