Delete all instances of the file. It will be re-created the next time you open Word. If you don't want to make any changes to the template, make the new file read only.
Summary: It's probably not the normal.dot file... This file holds info like default font type and size, any macros you have established etc... Renaming the file won't do anything UNLESS the file is corrupted.....
