It is more likely that this is an issue with your 'old' IBM Thinkpad.
There is no reason why PowerPoint obtained from different sources would be different in terms of audio/no audio.
You can try the PP viewer on you Thinkpad. If sound still does not work, then the problem is the Thinkpad.
I presume that the sound in the PP file is embedded. When you saved the PP file that was emailed to you, were there any other files with it - WAV, MP3 etc.
If so, you will need to copy them to the Thinkpad (same directory as the PP file)
