New to Spreadsheets, Simple Question HELP

Specs: Windows Vista
I know nothing about spreadsheets but what I need seems like it would be pretty simple.

Say I have this:

A B
Tom 3
Jim 2
Jane 4

I want the number in Row B to reflect how many times the name in Row A shows up.

I need it to look like this:

A B
Tom 3
Tom 3
Tom 3
Jim 2
Jim 2
Jane 4
Jane 4
Jane 4
Jane 4

Please give me step by step info on how to do this. I am using Microsoft Works Spreadsheets.

If you starting with just 3 lines and you want to end with 9, laid out as shown above, you are well beyond "pretty simple".

Formulas can not duplicate and insert rows of data. Formulas can only perform operations on the cells referenced in the formula and produce a result in the cell in which the formula resides.

To accomplish what I think you are asking for you would need a programming language such as VBA for Excel.
