hi there, ive got a strange problem with word and how it automatically configures network paths
i want to create a link to a file on the network drive, lets say \\russell\hi.doc
so, i type in \\russell\hi.doc and push space, or enter, or whatever, and then word automatically converts that to a link. that is good, i want it to do that!
i put my mouse over the file and it says file:///\\russellr\hi.doc ... and thats fine, cos it works :)
ok, so everything is good ... my problem is when i try to link to another server of ours, called sylvester ... lets say im trying to bring up the directory of \\sylvester\
i type \\sylvester\ and push enter or space, just like i did with \\russellr\ ... and now, the hyperlink is trying to point to ../../../../ instead of \\sylvester\
i try to change the hyperlink to point to the right place, but as soon as i save, it defaults back to ../../../../
can someone please tell me what is happening?? both russellr and sylvester are computers on the network, they are both in the same domain, they both definitely exist and are connected to the network
thanks for any help you guys can be! please ask me a question if that doesnt make sense :P

sorry for typos .... im comparing \\russellr\ and \\sylvester\ .. one works one doesnt
ive got permissions to access them both, and even if i didnt, that shouldnt make a difference

I could be off here but since Sylvester is another server try typing or copying the entire path to the file into the hyperlink.
The ../ is telling it to look into the root of the current directory or in your example four levels upward.

ok, heres a trial that i did
i opened a word document and i entered four network paths, just by typing in \\russellr\ and letting autoformat do its job
all four worked, including sylvester. they opened an explorer window to the correct directory
next, i saved the document
three still worked fine, but the sylvester link was changed to ../../../../ and it didnt work at all
