Hi, i need an operating system for an old computer that I got in the basement and don't want to put to waste. The computers hard drive is completely wiped. I have a windows98 install disc, but I don't have the bypass registration key for the final part, so it won't work. I need a free floppy disk installable operating system that i could get from the internet for download, but I'm having trouble finding one that could be compatible with the computer. The computer has a Slot-1 300 MHz Pentium II processor with 64 MB of RAM (I have an 128 MB ram stick if needed) A 3GB hard drive wiped, a floppy disk, and a 32x speed CD drive.

By this I assume that the either the bios or cd-rom don't support bootable cd's.

You could do the unscrupulous thing and search the net for a license key(you will have to wade through the many requests on forums like this).

Another option would be to use one of the versions of linux that are light on hardware requirements, Damn small linux would probably work well on that machine - here is a link that has some info on installing it with floppy support.

Rayburn, puppy Linux does not seem to be on the link of the page u gave me, plus that is for windows software which is not on the computer, so it is not compatible.

Judago, the damn small Linux does not work, do you have any other suggestions other then the windows 98 registry key?

Rayburn, I don't have a CD burner, so I can't use it.

Maybe you should get one, they're cheap. I don't think you'll get very far with floppy disks.

Are you at least able to connect to the internet on this old pc? If so how?

It would be a real stretch but it *may* be possible to partition, format, ftp an image, mount an image and install using floppy disks, but even if it is possible it would be a huge headache.

Failing a cd burner ask a local pc shop to burn an image, they'll probably only want a couple of dollars for their trouble/media.

I got the CD burner and tried burning different OS's on it like Ubunto Linux, but the CD-R won't boot, even though the BIOS is compatible to do so, I thought that maybe the CD didn't burn properly, but I tried with another disc and the same thing happened. Also, I think the computer is compatible with bootable USB's surprisingly enough, would a CD bootable work if the files were in a USB flash drive?

never mind, the USB is not compatible as a boot device, is there any floppy bootable OS out there, even if it's late 80's? I think that may be the only way.
