MS Works files won't open in XP

I upgraded from ME to XP and received new WP software..went from works to Word. Now I cannot open my works documents. When the program tries to convert it says the files are corrupt. But when I open in notepad...I am able to see some of the text...it's messed up however. Are there any suggestions?

Firstly, what version of Works were you using, and what version of Microsoft Word do you now have? Have you installed all the converters available in MSOffice?
Summary: My bonehead brother saved a MS Works Word Processor file with a .doc.wps extension to a floppy disk. When he saved it he may have saved as Word 97 (doc) type so he could work on it at school. Anyway, ...
