Let me start by saying that this is the first time I've tried to do this, but I managed to get my document to do exactly as you requested.

The answer appears to be buried within the various tips on this webpage and the links to the other pages provided.

Try this:

1 - Create a 6 page document
2 - Insert a Section break after Page 3
3 - Click View...Header and Footer
4 - Hit Ctrl-F9 to insert field braces {}
5 - Type page between the braces
6 - Arrow outside the braces and type space of space
7 - Hit Ctrl-F9 to insert field braces {}
8 - Type sectionpages between the braces

Your footer should now look like this:

{ page } of { sectionpages }

9 - Click in the first footer for Section 2
10 - Click the word page
11 - Click the Format Page Number icon on the Footer toolbar
12 - Click the Start at: radial button under Page Numbering and enter 1 in the field.
13 - Click on Print Preview and you should see what you want.

As far as I can tell, you are going to have to click in the footer for each section and tell Word what number you want that section to start at.

If you really have 400 pages and each section will be 3 pages, that's a lot of manual labor!

I'll bet this code be automated with a macro, but alas, I don't write VBA code for Word.
