First of all, I am using Word 2013. It is my understanding that there is a keyboard method for moving from anywhere in a document to the Table of Contents. Here are the steps I was provided with:
Press F5 (the Find and Replace window displays)
Click the Go To tab
In the Go to what: field click on 'Field'
In the Enter field name: field type 'toc'
Press Enter

Nothing happens when I execute these steps. That is to say, the cursor remains where it was. Am I doing some thing incorrectly?

Your steps are correct. Are you sure your document has a TOC?

Thanks for replying, riider. I tried it in two documents. Both have TOCs. In both cases the cursor failed to jump to the TOC.

Now I'm wondering whether one of MS Word's bazillion settings is preventing the Go To function from executing properly.

I'm using Word 2007 and you need to give a Direction when trying to get to the TOC

On my Word 2007 the steps are the same as your, with the exception of:

In the Enter field name: field type 'toc'

Try using: -TOC << NOTE the Dash before the letters TOC

There is a short note in my Find & Replace box which reads:

"Enter a + and - to move relative to the current location. Example +4 will move forward four items."

Also, my Enter field name: input box has a drop down.
If I scroll down a bit TOC is one of the choices.

There is also Previous and Next buttons.
Using Previous will also get me back to the TOC.

Try it with the dash or use the Previous button
and see if either helps.
