Not sure if this is more the OS than MS Word (Word 2000), but would welcome help as wasted much time on it already.
After downloading a Word file from a govt website, on opening got a message "WINWORD.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created".
This has persisted, despite my having removed Word, removed all Word references from the Registry before reinstalling Word 2000; also tried completely removing MS Office, removing Office references from Registry and reinstalling Office 2000. Have tried booting thru' F8 and "Last known good Config". Also tried Repairing firstly MSWord; then Win 2000.
Using a not uptodate Backup file, I did get it to work but had to do a lot of programme re-installation; THEN (not realising the d/loaded file had been the cause), repeated the mistake and am back to square one!
I've no idea where to find the 'log' created at the time by the Error ( - that might help), but anyway - still can't use my MS Word!
Can anyone help in what seemed to be a 'not so difficult problem' at first sight!

Hi Adrian!
I suggest you update all availiable service packs for Office installed.īThis via Windows update site and then the Office update tab. (You need the Original Office CD in the CD-ROM slot).
You have a cupla of memory leaks in Word
which I think MS has taken care of in Office updates. However you might have encounered another set of probelem, the virus angle. Viruses created implimented inside Wordfiles usualy
has the purpose to attack "Normal.dot" which is the template 4 all new created files. If you encountered the problem after you recieved a file which you handn't AntiVirus checked this might be the case here.No matter how many times you reinstall you keep the problem as a result of that infected file (bare in mind that no matter how good an Anti-Virus protection might be you can't be sure that it findes all "new" created virus).
If you still need that infected file,
open it copy the text to Notepad (textfile only) and reinstall Office and open the file
again. You shouldn't encounter the problem again. If you are (like me) a bit paranoid against
what files might do to destroy your system,
write protect "Normal.dot" and don't allow anything other than RX to the file.(Have had simular problem when my fiance "fu_ed" up my system which forced me to take action. She is now degraded to single user account on all my harddrives ;)

Mats,
Thanks your helpful response - which I followed. Yes, the service packs for Office were somewhat out of date - partly due to the recent blot outs! That has resolved the problem; thank you again.
As to your own problems, did you check as to whether there is a Fiancee SP available? (No need to answer!)
Regards,
Adrian
