how do I add a picture file like *.jpg in my word document instead of the entire picture? Any clues, please.

I'm assuming you want it to show up as an icon and not show the picture?
If so, go to Insert, Object, and select Create From File. Select your picture and put a checkmark in the box that says Display as Icon. Then when you double click the icon the picture will open up in your default picture viewer.
