microsoft word help

my friend wrote an essay for her class on her windows xp...the computer is old and it sucks. she cant save anything to the computer so she just saves it to her flash drive.. she went to retrieve the essay from her flash drive and half the words are now boxes...

what should she do!

also the computer cant get internet so it has to be fixd without the internet

It would help us help you if you'd tell us what application she wrote the document in.

Assuming it's MS Word, I would try 2 things:

1 - Right click the file, choose Open with, and try WordPad.
1.1 - Also try NotePad

2 - Take the flash drive to another machine with Word (or whatever app it was written in) and see if it will open correctly on that computer.

If it still shows boxes on another system, then the document is probably corrupt and she might be out of luck.
