Mail-merging DBF files into MS Word

Hi I had a question about a problem we've been having with opening a .dbf file within a word document using the mail merge feature.
I'm currently running Microsoft Word (Office) 2000. The problem we're having is that we need to merge (using mail merge in Word) a .dbf file into the document, but it does not open the file, so we've been having to merge Excel (.xls) files instead which is much slower. Mail merging a DBF file in word is no problem on another computer here, but they're running MS Office 2003 as opposed to 2000. We've been through all of the settings and we can't get it to work. Is this just not possible with Office 2000, or is there something we're missing? Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Are you merging from an exported DBF file? I ask this because you would not ordinarily use the whole database for a merge. If so, I would suggest exporting to a comma delimited file. (Providing you don't have commas in the file)

taxi - after we merge, we merge to a printer to print the file in bulk quantities. So it's slower because instead of being able to merge the .dbf, i have to merge the excel file causing Excel to open up and run while i'm merging/printing.
wizard-fred - we are merging an exported database file. it's a .dbf export from a bulk mailing program (it's a database of addresses). Is there any way i could make sure that i am exporting it as a comma delimited file?

Most databases support exporting to other forms. Even Excel can import .dbf and export to .csv.
