Mac does not recognize extensions automatical

My Mac does not automatically recognize any extensions . Anytime the file I am looking to open does not have the proper extension, my computer does not recognize the program to use to open the file. The other computers are able to recognize the file type without the extension. How can I restore harmony between my Mac and these extensions?
