I use windows 98 PC with Office 2000 standard .
Suddenly Ms word 2000 is not functioning properly . When I start Word , it displays welcome screen then the PC freezes. after some time the system displays error message 'System is in dangerously low resources'. and displays a window Abort retry etc. I have to restart the PC.All other applications are working fine except word. The system is fine tuned with unnecessary programs removed. Also McAfee Antivirus S/w is used with latest updates.
By reinstalling MS office , the problem get solved.
Incidenatlly my colleage faced same problem with Excel . But reinstalling didn't serve the purpose. The harddisk was formatted, reinstalled windows and Office is reinstalled.
This thing happened around seven / eight PCs in our Office during last month. How to troubleshoot this ? We want to avoid reinstalling office or in worst case , formatting harddisk. The REPAIR option of Office 2000 is unable to rectify the error.
Help us in this regard.

This is usually caused by a corrupted normal.dot file.
You could just delete the file and Word will recreate a new one.
In doing such you will lose all of the customized settings in Word.

Thanks mesich. Next time I do try with this tip. Also, is there any file to excel also? (like normal.dot to word)

No there is not. Check out the link below on low system resources.
There are also several links with good information in them. If you still have questions post back and I or someone else shall expand on it.
