I have seen the licenses for sale on the wholesale sites.

My question and also for a friend of mine, we both would like to know say u have an OEM of 98 and u build systems and the customer insists on 98.

Usually how many licenses and for $$$$$$$$ is the norm on any operating system, how many are u allowed to install, etc. by law.

Say I had 1 OEM of XP Pro, how many can I install on new systems legally.

If I wanted to say install Xp Pro on 10 of my newly built systems, what would it take to get legal using one OEM disc?

Thanks for clearing this nagging problem up in order to "get legal".

It's all in the OEM distributor agreement with MS, they will set the licence terms and install limits. If you are meaning one OEM CD for your use, then it's one machine - your own.

You really need to be writing to MS about this, or check their site for information for resellers and distributors.

You'll need one license per computer. I bet MS has a bulk sales discount.

One glitch you're going to hit is that MS no longer supports Windows 98, meaning you may not be able to buy OEM license packages. You can still buy '98 retail, while they last.

One solution is to sell the computers without an operating system and let the customers install their own. I bet the customer who wants '98 already has a copy from a previous computer...

Best Wishes,
Bob

Hi Bob,

That is not completely accurate, as MS have extended their support for Win 98 until Jan 2004 - the announcement came out a couple weeks ago.

Seems take up of XP is not as good as they hoped, so they caved in to market forces, about not making such a popular home platform redundant just yet.

Still will have problems finding it on the shelf though. :)
