You don't say where you are I'll bet your '@' key is available if you press the 'Shift' and '2' keys (US keyboard), or the 'shift' and ' key (UK keyboard). If so it's because your laptop's keyboard is set to the wrong location. Go into Control Panel, 'region and language', then the 'keyboard & language' tab - change to whichever location your keyboard is from.

Hi - thanks for the quick reply - but it's still not working. I live in Germany so I have a German keyboard (so I can type the ü and ö and ä. The language region is set to Germany. When typing ordinary text in word and indeed now (@@@@) I can type the at with ctr+alt+Q as is supposed to happen. Even in the text of an email message it works - but not in the address box. Do you think the problem could be combining the German language keyboard with an English language version of the operating system (windows 7) and outlook? would be grateful if you can help me crack this! What, if anything, do you get when you press the @ key? It looks as if you would normally have to press the 'Alt Gr' and 'Q' keys together on a German keyboard, rather than the combination you are using - is that correct?
