I have a Dell Mini9 with 8GB solid state HD. I want to use external harddrive and an external CD Drive to install software on the xternal harddrive. I cannot seem to by-pass the 8GB to reach the xternal HD. Any information will be appreciated.

Connect your external drive and format it (if not already done). You should be able to see it under My Computer. When installing a program, make sure the drive is connected, and when asked where you want to install the program to, just select the external drive (or a sub folder on the drive).

Great Answer and I thank you but I need to ask one more thing about this. I find the external drive on my computer and it is a plug and play which says it is already formatted. The problem is it does not give me a choice between the "c" drive and the "d" drive. It starts installing on the "c" drive. what do I need to do? Thanks stemerrod (Charles)

What starts installing on the C drive?

Are you installing an OS?

I installed two software programs, not OS, before I realized it was not installing on the "D" drive. I clicked the "D" drive icon on "My Computer" and opened several icons on the "D" drive. I then clicked install on the icon that appeared on this group of icons on the external HD this is why I thought it was installing to "D" drive. I installed "QuickVerse" and
"Wordsearch" Bible programs. I had already installed Microsoft Office Home and Student onto the 8GB "C" drive and another program called "Nero 8" which used about 6GB total of the 8. I was trying to keep anything else off the "C" Drive. So whatever I try to install goes to the "C" Drive without offering a choice although both drives are present on the "My Computer".
