Hyperlink from Outlook to Excel

I'm trying to place a hyperlink in the Outlook Contacts note field that links to specific (named) cells in an Excel spreadsheet. For example:
<<<file://C:\Documents and Settings\Mary Barnard\My Documents\Pet and Plantcare\testrec.xls#Sheet1!A41:A49>>>
This link works in a Word doc, bringing me to the correct spot in the Excel spreadsheet. However, the same link used in the Contacts note field only pulls up the spreadsheet without going to the named cells. What am I doing wrong?

Is the Excel file already open when you use the hyperlink from Word and/or Outlook? Here's why I ask...

I did some testing and found that the link in Word will only select the cells in the hyperlink if the Excel file is already open. If it isn't, the link will open the file but not select the cells.

When using the link from Outlook, it appears that Outlook attempts to open the file regardless of whether the file is open or not. Try this: Open the Excel file, make some changes but do not save it. Now go to Outlook and click the link. In my case Excel tells me that reopening the file will cause me to lose the changes. This does not happen with Word - it appears to know that the file is already open.

So, the bottom line appears to be this:

1 - Both Word and Outlook will open the Excel file but not select the cells if the Excel file isn't already open when the link is clicked.
2 - If the Excel file is open, Word will select the cells.
3 - If the Excel file is open, Outlook tries to open the file again. Once it opens/reopens the file, it doesn't select the cells (see #1).

Does any of this help? I don't know, but I'll keep trying stuff.
