Subject: How Transer Office to Second HDOS: Windows XP ProCPU/Ram: Intel Celeron/512MBManufacturer/Model: Compaq/ Presario 5BW |
Comment: Compaq Presario 5000, Model 5BW220, Made 7/19/00, Windows XP Pro, 15 Gig master drive, 37 Gig slave drive, 512 MB RAM, 631 MHz Intel Celeron processor, Compaq 06C0 motherboard, MS Office 2003 I want to delete Office from my master drive and install it onto my slave drive to save space on my master drive. I still have the Office driver or installation cd. How do I choose to install Office onto the slave drive instead of the master. When I click on the installer cd icon on my cd/dvd drive Office starts installing but to my master drive I'm sure. Is it necessary or advantageous to have Office on the master drive? Will I have any problems using Office off my slave drive? A while ago I simply right clicked on Office from my programs menu and either cut/pasted or copy/pasted Office onto my slave drive. It did copy Office onto the slave drive, but ever since then I've been getting Windows Installer Office pop-ups, why? Why is it necessary to uninstall and install Office to move it to another drive, but other programs only require cut/copy? Does the cut/copy procedure only work for simple programs? Thanks for any replies. xxxxxxxxxx

Reply: (edit)When office installs, it not only puts files in the "Office" folder that your copy/pasted, but puts information in a bunch of places like the Windows registry. If you just copy and paste the Office folder, all that other information will be pointing to the wrong location. What you need to do is go into your control panel, the the add/remove programs applet. Uninstall office from here. (If you moved the Office folder, be sure to put it back where it originally was or the uninstall won't work right). Now put in the office CD and start the installation again. When the installer program runs, you can follow the instructions until you get to a page asking for the type of install. You have the options for "Typical", "Complete", or "Custom". If you click custom, you can select what programs to install, and also change the installation path. -Ryan Adams http://RyanTAdams.com
