How to lock a shared file

How do I configure an Excel file that's stored on the file server to lock when another user has already opened the file. Basically, I want the second user to get a message that the file is already in use and locked for editing.

That should be automatic. The second user should get the message that the file is in use and can be opened as Read-Only.
Life's more painless for the brainless.

It's not happening. When a user clicks on an Excel file on the server, and then another user opens the same file - they don't get the lock messaging.
Is there a way I can verify that it is enables / checked on?
Thanks,

Let me re phare my question - It seems that file locking mechanism is not working on a DFS environment. For example, when user A opens a document and user B opens the same document - user B does not get a message that the file is already in use user B and only view the document but no editing is allowed.
How do I configure it so that user B will be locked out of the file and can only view the document?
