Solved how to get data to correspond to text

Specs: Windows 7
I am working on a spread sheet in Excel 2010. The first column has over 1,000 cells and 5 different items in it. The second column has the price of the item. The third has days spent in inventory for that item. In another cell I am trying to figure out a formula to get the average days spent in inventory for any particular item.

Without more specific information,
like Column Letters and Row Numbers as a start,
the best I can do is suggest you look at the

and the AVERAGEIFS() functions.

In addition to Mike's suggestion of using AVERAGEIF, you might want to consider starting with a Filtered list of your items in a separate column so that you have a single instance of each item. This can be done using the Advanced Filter feature found on the Data ribbon and choosing the Unique Records Only option.

You should then be able to use the AVERAGEIF function against that list, e.g.

where Column A contains your Items, Column C contains the Days and E2 contains the first item in your filtered list.
