I'm using OfficeXP and my PST file for Outlook is over 900 meg!! I've deleted several thousand messages in several inbox folders. I've also run the "compact now" feature in File/Data File Management/Settings but the size of the file has not decreased. Suggestions?

Jim,
Try PSTCompactor (http://www.pstcompactor.com). It can compress your email attachments and force the mailbox to compact, etc. You can expect between 10-30% reduction.
There's a home-users edition (SOHO) for US$24.95 and an enterprise-orientated Professional version for $189
