Solved how to clear contents of linked cell without losing link

Specs: Windows XP
i have a code to clear cells. here is the thing: i have a main workbook that has some cells linked to other workbooks. the other workbooks will be updated by user using a submit button, but i want the main worksheet to clear automatically, without having to wait for other sheets to clear. but the cells are linked, so if i clear the main workbook, it loses the links to the other workbooks. can this be done?
example: WB1, cell B8 is linked to WB2 cell A3. WB2 clears its cells to blank every time user keys in macro. WB1 reflects this change. however, WB1 needs to reflect a new week of data automatically every week, and if the user of WB2 forgets to update his WB2, WB1 will reflect the misinformation. but how can i get WB1 to be ready for a new week of data if it is linked to WB2, without messing with the link?

Is there a cell in the sheets that you link to that contains a date or something else that lets you know if the sheet has been updated?

If so, use that as a key to determine if the links should return the data from the other sheet or return nothing.

Generically your links might look like this...

=IF(WB2!A1 = "a specific date or key character", WB2!A3, "")
