how to change dates to text in excel for merg

August 7, 2011 at 12:59:04
Specs: Windows 7
I need to do a merge with just the month and date spelled out as such "November 8" . I figured out how to format the text to say "November 8" but it still merges as 11/8/11. How can I merge just that text or get the computer to treat the text and general text and not a date???? goin crazy!!!

Excel stores dates and times internally as numbers, with the Integer portion being the date and the decimal portion being the time (stored as the decimal portion of 24hrs).

With your November 8 showing in A1, try this:

Since it's a Date, LEN(A1) will probably return 5.

Regardless of how you format the cell, a date will still be a date within Excel and will be treated as such.

If you want to force a date to be a text string, formatted as General, use the TEXT function:

=TEXT(A1,"MMMM d")

With that function in B1, try LEN(B1). You should now get 10.

You can then do a Copy...PasteSpecial...Values to eliminate the TEXT function and retain November 8 as Text, formatted as General.

If that doesn't merge correctly, try formatting the cell as Text after doing the Copy...PasteSpecial...Values.
