to return a result here
Position Pref Result
A P 1
A Q 2
A R 3
A S 4
B P 5
B Q 6
B R 7
B S 8
C P 9
C Q 10
C R 11
C S 12
D P 13
D Q 14
D R 15
D S 16

Position Pref Result
A Q formula?

so if column a = A and Column B = Q then it returns the result of column C =2

As far as your question, you can create a Helper Column with the concatenation of Position and Pref values and then do your VLOOKUP on the Helper Column.

         A               B         C         D
1      Helper        Position	  Pref     Result
2     =B2&C2             A	   P          1
3     =B3&C3             A	   Q	      2
4      etc.
