Likely if it's saved in the Open Office text format (.odt), then you may get just gibberish. Why not just use the portable version of Open Office on a flash drive if you're concerned about conflicting programs:

Hi,

Documents created in OpenOffice and saved in xml format e.g., MyDocument.xml will open normally in MS Word. (at least in my limited experience of Open Office).

Can you ask the person sending the document to re-save in xml format.

If not, use a copy of OpenOffice to open it yourself, (the odt file) and then save as xml and open in MS Word, if you want to keep using Word.

Open Office opens most Word and Excel files, although some formatting might not be quite right especially if lots of shapes have been used, but straight forward documents convert OK.

Glad I could help.
My son was the one who pointed me to it, some of his college buddies use OO while he has Office.
