FTP in Vista doesn't save password

Specs: Windows Vista
I am trying to connect to an FTP server that hosts a range of Word files.
In XP, it's as simple as clicking save password in IE and then you can open the files from the server.
In Vista, I have tried mapping network drives, and using save password in IE but it doesn't save the password.
When I map a network drive, it is saved correctly, but then when you double click a word file, it opens up IE and then asks for the FTP password again. How can I get it to open up in the local application directly and not ask for the password.
