Go to View, Header and Footer, Switch to Footer. Go to Insert Autotext, select File Name and Path.
Go to File, Save As and save it as either a Template with a name you choose or name it Normal.dot overwriting the current Normal.dot.
Then after opening Word go to File, New and select your named Template unless you chose to overwrite Normal.dot then it will already be that one with the opened document when you opened Word.
Ok, I am using Word 97 but I believe your Word also uses the Normal.dot template. If not then someone please correct me.

I do it slightly differently - I create a macro that inserts all the stuff I want n headers and footers (date created, page number, my name, etc) I then link the macro to an icon on the toolbar so if i'm working on a document that originated an another machine I can still insert my details

The method I suggested will do it to all documents you create from the used template.
Rayok's method will allow you to manually apply (a single click) to any unprotected document.
