I am having to resave a .xlsx file as a .xls version for some one to view who has not been upgraded to 2007.

The file is becoming unmanagably large when I do this. Why is this happening and how can I make the .xls file smaller?

one thing that makes .xls files huge is empty space...a good
way to check this is to go into each sheet and press CTRL-
END. If you're miles below or to the right of your data, delete the
offending rows/columns and re-save.

Also avoid "notes" in column IV, or row 65536

Should bring down the file size considerably.
