I have two columns of data that I need to compare using some formulas (vlookup, conditional sums, etc..) my problem is that while the two columns appear to be the same format (some text string) one is actually text and the other is actually general. Therefore the above mentioned formulas do not work. If I change the format in one of the ranges of cells to the to match the other then I have to hit the F2 key and the enter key to make the cells change to the new format. Can anyone please tell me a quick and easy way to effectivly do the same thing as an F2 enter in each cell. I have thousands of cells to do this to. Thanks! ScottD

Whenever i have encountered this problem, I import the spreadsheet into Access, then export back into excel.

It is an extra step, but removes the formatting problem.

Maybe I am missing something but Select your range of cells, right click on anyone of them and select Format, Cells.

Thanks for the access suggestion, I will try that. If anyone else has a suggestion or MACRO that I could use to force excel to do an "F2" and "enter" that would be appreciated too.

I can't find anything in the DATA drop down menu that is called converter. Maybe it is part of an excel add-in that I dont have? I have not been able to find a "ctxt" or "cnum" fuction either. Where would I find those in the menus?

It's in standard menu usually..! My excel is in french and of course u can add what u want to ur menu by right clic on toolbar and choose "customize" .
Functions can be found with the insert / function, then look in the text submenu .U should find there a tool to convert text to number (ctxt in french) and reverse (cnum in french).
Data conversion can be autoopen when u bring a file with .txt . Try to save ur excel sheet as a text, and next open it with excel . It'll normally open the data/convert (or import).
