excel won't recognize current date

Microsoft Office excel 2007 - upgrade

Specs: Windows XP
In my speadsheet, Columns E and F need to be date formatted. I have done this, however, everytime I enter today's date, or any date from the past year, I get a "Check Out" error. It tells me I need to enter a valid date. I have cleared all formatting and it still will not work. No where is there anything, even on google, about this "Check Out" error. I need help ASAP, as I am on a deadline to submit this Gantt Chart to my directors. PLEASE HELP!
