Excel won't open a file

Specs: Windows XP
Got an old problem with Excel 2003 on my desktop running under XP Pro.
Normally when you double click the *.xls file Excel should open it automatically, but, once again, Excel starts and no file is opened.
When I click in Excel : File --> Open --> *.xls the file opens without any problems.

As I said, I had this problem before (before I upgraded to IE 8.0, maybe coincidence?) and the remedy was to open an Excel file, then go to Tools, Options, General and remove the checkmark from "Ignore other applications" but this remedy doesn't work anymore. Any ideas?

Are the .xls files associated with Excel?

You could also try:

On the Task Bar,
Detect and Repair?

Then there is this:

Windows Start Button
excel /unregserver

excel /regserver

This should resets the windows registry to Excel's factory defaults.

Thank you for the ideas. I didn't need to try any of them, however. Today it works correctly -- the first time in a week. Go figure.
