Hi from a newbie to this forum. I'm pretty new to Excel so go easy ok.. thanks.

I have a Excel list of data from a motorcycle race series.

The series is made up of multiple rounds (5) with an overall points total for each round (Round Total) and a series overall at the end (Series Total).

I want to sort the "Series total" by the points (thats easy) but I want it to sort any equal "Series Total" points based on the highest last "Round Total".

For example-

Rider John scored Round 1- 10pts, Round 2- 20pts, Round 3- 20pts, Round 4- 10pts, Round 5- 10pts = Series Total 60pts

Rider Andrew scored Round 1- 5pts, Round 2- 20pts, Round 3- 20pts, Round 4- 15pts, Round 5 10pts = Series Total 60pts

Both riders have 60pts, and the same points score in the final round (5), but because rider Andrew had a higher points score at the 4th round, he then is sorted higher than rider John.

How do I do this?

Thanks,
David

Sorry but i got it wrong with my sorting of riders with equal points.

The correct way to sort them is to award the higher placing to the rider with the most higher placings.

For example-
Rider John has 2 x 1st, 3 x 2nds, 1 x 4th, 2 x 6th.

Rider Andy has 2 x 1st, 4 x 2nds, 2 x 6th.

As rider Andy has 4 x 2nds as opposed to rider Johns 3 x 2nds, he should be awarded the higher position.

So, my question is- how do I sort this data?

Thanks in advance,
David

Sort them by the highest point value.

The finishing position must have a particular point value associated with it. for example:
1st=20 pts, 2nd=10, 3rd=5, 4th=4, 5th=3, 6th=2

If John has 2 x 1st, 3 x 2nds, 1 x 4th, 2 x 6th then his point score would be = 78.

If Andy has 2 x 1st, 4 x 2nds, 2 x 6th then his point score would be = 84

So unless there is some reason why Andrew only got 5pts in 1st round and 15pts in round 4 then I would say there is a flaw in your scoring method.
Andrew placed three different positions: 1st, 2nd and 6th but received four different point scores: 5, 20, 15 and 10. Perhaps they get points for style or tricks?

So to answer your original question...the only thing that needs to be sorted is the scoring system. Sort that out and then you can sort the riders by their score totals.

No there is nothing wrong with the scoring system- it is the system used world wide. The example I gave was just an example only. Dont take it so literal.

Anyway, I figured out what to do.

When it comes to Excel, it is lierally using numbers. With Excel it is either true or false. So, it was a poor example.

Glad you worked it out.
