Looking for a forumula that will allow me to solve the following problem:

Salary after tax = £78

Tax rate is 22%

What was the original gross salary?

Obviously £100 is the answer in this simple example but I need a forumla to do it for other figures.

TIA
Martin

The 78 you mention = 100%-22%, so if you multiply the answer by the inverse of 1-x% this gives you the original answer.

per-tax amount=1/(1-tax%)*Amount after tax

OK, so I have the figure 78 in cell A1

What forumula do I put in cell A2 for example for the number 100 to show?

OK, I've got it now, thanks very much for your help.

More of a mathematical question than software I think :-)

Answering for Bignelis, I'd say you would use:

=1/(1-0.22)*A1

Simple Algebra actually... part x rate = base. :)

Part being the amount
Rate being the percentage
Base being the total

You can use this formula to determine any one missing component of the three.

So, if you're looking for percentage for example, you'd divide the amount by the total.

amount/total = percentage

This assuming that the tax rate is constant and not graduated.
