Hi everyone

1) I'm just wondering whether this is possible. We curently have an Excel file that's about 10MB in size. The file is giving us problems seeing that its so big. It takes quite a while to open over mapped drives and I think it's because of all the PivotTables that's in it. It takes about 50 seconds just to open from a client PC. Does anyone know why it takes so long?

2) The Excel files has multiple sheets. One sheet takes all the data, the others are all used as 'reporting' sheets really - lots of PivotTables and graphs that reports what is in the first sheet. This makes the file grow very quickly.
Is there a way that all this 'reporting' can be done in a different Excel file?

Thanks

1. Most likely it takes so long due to the size of the file. It may also be fragmented. If you have recalculation set to automatic, this may further prolong the loading time, especially with a file that size.

2. Yes, you can make references to other excel files in the same way you make them to other work sheets.

Nigel Spike,

Thanks you very much for your response. From you first comment I take it that this is a common problem????

Also, not to be greedy or anything, but can you suggest what such a 'formula' or 'reference' will look like?

Thanks

Jefton

Yes it is a common problem if you need to have that big amounts of data in one file.

=SUM('[Testfile.xls]Sheet1'!$A$1:$A$3)

Summary of A1:A3 from Testfile.XLS inserted in the current file.
