Excel overlaping information

February 2, 2011 at 07:16:07
Specs: Windows XP
I have a file with a lot of word lists, different sizes. I would like to know if it's possible to find overlaps between these lists automatically.
List A: lemon apple salad
List B: salad banana strawberry
List C: banana
I want to know if I there is an automatic way of signing this overlaps, or more specifically say how much overlap % there is between each of the lists.
Comebody can help?
Thank you in advance

Do you need the word/value in column A to match the same row in column B?

apple	banana	apple
banana	apple	salad
salad	salad	banana

Is apple in column A matched only to Column C, since it is not in the same row in column B?

I'm not exactly sure how to compare between the columns, but I know it's possible (try the VLOOKUP function).

I was going to recommend the "COUNTIF" function, but that would only help if you were looking for matches for a single word/value. If you were needing every possible word to be compared in the column, that might be too cumbersome.

Depending on how many different names you are looking for, you could do a separate COUNTIF function for every name. Take each count total for every name, divide by total, multiply by 100, and you have a %.
