Excel 'IF' formula on array with text

April 18, 2011 at 11:50:04
Specs: Windows XP
I am trying to write an IF formula to tell me if any cell in a certain column is "Obligation" The formula i am trying to use is =IF(G1:G50="Obligation","yes","no"). Am i doing something wrong or will the IF formula not work on an array? If not what other formula could i use to accomplish this?

Try this:

=COUNTIF(G1:G50,"Obligation")

It will give you the number of times the text string "Obligation" appears within your range of cells.

If you really want a "Yes" or "No" response, just warp it in an =IF() function:

=IF(COUNTIF(G1:G50,"Obligation"),"Yes","No")
