excel drop down list not working

I'm using office 97 on win 98 and have set up a spreadsheet with quite a lot of calclations, etc going on - it includes data validation from a list with the drop down option selected. However, the drop down arrow does not appear. (The validation is set up pretty much the same as per other sheets which work so it seems to be a bit of a quirk) Anyone got any ideas?
Also, the normal view doesn't work, only page break preview. Again, any ideas?
