This should be extremely basic, but for some reason, I cannot make this work. All I want to do is format a column to turn numbers I type into dates. I highlight the column, go to format cells, choose date, then select the 3/14/01 format. As I understand, if I type in the numbers 31401 in that column, it should automatically produce 3/14/01. However, it does not. Rather, it gives me 12/20/85. As another example, if I type 21704 I get 6/3/59. This is driving me INSANE--does anyone know what the problem is???

You need to use the slash, otherwise it thinks your putting in a number, which it then converts to a date.
