Excel Attachmnt in Outlook not open

Hey computing community, lil help here please. I am running office 2k and i received an excel file as an attachment, when i try to open it in outlook while i have another excel file with data currently open, it will ask me what i want to do with the file, save it or open it, i choose open it, then it wont open, my system doesnt hang but the file just wont open, it pulls up the excel file i already had open. BUT, if i open a blank excel page before choosing open the attachment , it opens fine, anyone got any idea whats going on? thanks SOK
