hi i'm very new to excel. My current task
objective is to create a counter to two columns
in an existing table, then do a counting of
numbers in column 2 for each same item
name in column 1, and output the data in
another sheet. is there a need to go visual
basic for this? or simple excel formulas would
solve the problem? thanks a lot, awaiting for
kind replies.

e.g. column1 = item name, column2 =
quantity, output will be column 1 with item
name and column 2 with total quantities of that
item (Assume sorting is already done)

As this sounds like a homework assignment (or even if it isn't) I'll point you in a direction that might help.

Look up the SUMIF function in Excel Help. From the description of your task, that's what it sounds like you should use.

Come on back if that doesn't work or if you need help with it.
